Keir Starmer has attempted to shut down mounting rumours of a leadership challenge, offering firm praise for Andy Burnham’s achievements as mayor. He urged the party to avoid internal quarrels and maintain focus on governance.
Burnham’s refusal to rule out future ambitions sparked renewed speculation. With the party preparing for a potentially unpopular budget, the political temperature around Labour’s leadership has risen.
Starmer, speaking en route to the G20 summit, recalled relying heavily on Burnham’s updates after the synagogue attack. He stressed their cooperation and described Burnham’s leadership as “exemplary.”
He also cautioned MPs who have been spreading rumours, particularly those suggesting that Wes Streeting is positioning himself for a coup. Starmer argued that internal disputes only undermine progress on economic issues.
Burnham continued promoting his Manchester growth agenda, stating he has launched no challenge. Still, he avoided closing the door on future political possibilities, keeping speculation alive.
