Sonay Kartal Reaches Career Milestone with Wuhan Open Final Berth

Date:

In an impressive display of resilience and skill, British tennis player Sonay Kartal has advanced to the Wuhan Open final, marking the biggest achievement of her career. The 24-year-old secured a hard-fought victory over Jelena Ostapenko on Saturday, winning 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5), despite trailing in both sets and saving six set points.

Kartal’s triumph is a significant milestone following her six-month hiatus due to a back injury. Since returning to competitive play this month, she has delivered a series of notable wins against recognized opponents such as Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina, showcasing her return to form.

Entering the tournament ranked world No. 170, Kartal has become the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s inception in 2009. Her successful run guarantees her a spot in the top 50 of the world rankings, overtaking Katie Boulter to become Britain’s top-ranked women’s singles player.

Kartal’s match against Ostapenko was a testament to her mental fortitude, as she overcame substantial deficits and saved crucial set points before securing victory in two challenging tiebreaks. She described the encounter as one of the toughest in her career, praising her mental resilience.

Previously, Kartal gained attention by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2025, but her progress was hampered by injury. Her current performances in China indicate a promising resurgence, potentially establishing her among the leading figures in women’s tennis.

In the other semi-final, Poland’s Maja ChwaliÅ„ska defeated her compatriot Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. ÅšwiÄ…tek faced difficulties due to a left-thigh injury, necessitating a medical timeout and continuing the match with her leg bandaged.
