Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen has vowed his team will “keep fighting” for survival, despite facing a seemingly impossible task from -6 points. The Owls were handed a 12-point deduction after owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration, leaving them 15 points from safety.
Pedersen described the development as a “sad situation” that could “still be a good day.” He met with “emotional” staff and players in the training-ground canteen, telling them the club “cannot continue” as it has for the past eight months and needs a “fresh restart.”
The administration ousts Chansiri, whose “financial mismanagement” has been blamed by fans for the club’s collapse. The club owes $pounds{}$1 million to HMRC and has failed to pay wages on time in five of the last seven months, leading to a depleted squad.
The club is now under the control of Begbies Traynor. The administrators confirmed they have taken charge of both the club and the stadium company, allowing them to be sold as a package. They hope this will attract strong interest from buyers.
The Supporters Trust, which is “overjoyed” at Chansiri’s exit, is now calling on fans to end their boycotts. “Now begins the phase of renewal,” their statement read, urging fans to buy tickets and merchandise to provide the “stability and income” the club desperately needs.
