France Supports UK Joining EU’s ‘Made in Europe’ Industrial Plan

Date:

France has lifted its opposition to the United Kingdom’s participation in the European Union’s proposed “Made in Europe” industrial legislation, provided that the UK aligns its trade policies with the EU, including tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. This legislative initiative, known as the Industrial Accelerator Act, is a joint effort by France and Germany to bolster European manufacturing and shield domestic industries from foreign competition.

The proposal, aimed at the automotive sector, would allow the UK and other eligible European partners to join the scheme. For the UK to participate, it must adopt EU trade defense measures, such as the tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles set to take effect in 2024, and comply with future restrictions on trade and investment with third countries. Norway is also considered a potential candidate under this framework.

British officials and industry leaders advocate for inclusion in the scheme, arguing that it would safeguard the nation’s automotive supply chains, manufacturing jobs, and investment. They warn that exclusion could endanger billions of pounds in automotive trade. The UK government has expressed support for the Franco-German proposal, viewing it as a promising development, though further negotiations within the EU are necessary before a final decision can be reached.

The outcome of these discussions will largely depend on the UK’s willingness to align its trade policies with those of the EU. The decision holds significant implications for the UK’s automotive industry, as aligning with the EU’s trade measures could lead to strengthened economic ties and enhanced protection for domestic industries.
