West Coast Main Line Capacity Limits Block London-Wrexham and Rochdale Train Services

Date:

Plans to launch direct train services between London and the towns of Wrexham and Rochdale have been turned down due to capacity constraints on the West Coast Main Line. The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) cited the heavily trafficked nature of the railway as the primary reason, indicating that adding these services could increase delays and compromise reliability.

The ORR’s decision also affected proposed additional services from London to Blackpool, emphasizing that maintaining gaps in the timetable is essential for trains to recover from disruptions and prevent delays from cascading throughout the network.

Both the proposed direct connection from London to the Welsh town of Wrexham and the planned Lumo service connecting Rochdale with the capital faced earlier rejections. These services aimed to introduce new direct links to London, offering enhanced connectivity for residents of these towns.

Despite these rejections, the ORR approved one additional evening service from London to Chester, operated by Avanti. This service will utilize a train that would otherwise have returned to a depot without passengers, thus providing an opportunity to carry customers.

The ORR explained that their assessment showed no significant changes in capacity and performance on the southern section of the West Coast Main Line since similar proposals were previously rejected. This ongoing capacity challenge continues to impact the feasibility of introducing new direct services along this crucial transport corridor.
