President Donald Trump voiced significant wariness ahead of his upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, telling an interviewer, “China is always looking for an edge.”
This cautious tone was paired with uncertainty about the outcome of the talks, which are scheduled for two weeks from now. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see what happens,” Trump added.
This skepticism coexists with his admission that the high-tariff policy at the center of the dispute is “not sustainable.” He blamed China for the policy, claiming, “they forced me to do that.”
Despite his wariness, Trump also expressed personal optimism, noting, “I get along great with him [Xi]. I think we’re going to be fine.” This suggests he hopes his personal rapport can overcome his strategic doubts.
The meeting is critical as a 90-day trade truce expires on November 10. Trump’s goal remains a “fair deal,” but his comments indicate he is bracing for a difficult negotiation.
