Trump’s Message to Europe: Ukraine’s Security Is Now Your Job

Date:

President Donald Trump is sending an unambiguous message to European allies: the primary responsibility for Ukraine’s security is now theirs. This new directive, which relegates the U.S. to a supporting role, was also a central theme in a recent conversation with Vladimir Putin.

Trump’s stance was solidified in a meeting on August 18 with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. This crucial discussion set the stage for his subsequent call with Putin, where he laid out the new American posture on the regional security architecture.

According to Trump, it is now up to Europe to provide the “significant security guarantees” that Ukraine seeks. The role of the United States, as he has publicly stated, will be to serve as “backup,” a fundamental change in the transatlantic security relationship.

This initiative is part of a dual-track diplomatic effort with Russia. Trump revealed that his talks with Putin, including a recent meeting in Alaska on August 15, also encompass the future goal of reducing their vast nuclear arsenals after the Ukraine conflict is resolved.
